![]() Araragi has just saved Hitagi from her oddity, and Hitagi brings up the topic of what she should do to pay Araragi back. This scene is from the first episode of Mayoi Snail, the second arc of Bakemonogatari. Throughout this clearly scientific post, I will lead you through several key scenes and prove once and for all who best girl really is. I am, of course, talking about Senjougahara Hitagi, the seemingly cold and distant girlfriend of our main character, Araragi Koyomi, as I'm sure you could tell by the title. The complaints about her are endless: she's possessive and jealous, aggressive to the point of being threatening, she treats her boyfriend like trash, she's a bitch, she's even been accused of straight up domestic abuse. The motivations and flaws of each character are not obvious at the outset, each becoming clearer as the story arcs progress, and character development happens non linearly, as many gain depth and reveal new sides of themselves long after their own focal arc has ended. With that said, it really is shocking that in a series so heavily reliant on good characters to be popular, there can be so many in the fanbase that so completely misinterpret the characterization of not just a prominent main character, but the lead heroine! It's no surprise, then, that the one draw that keeps viewers coming back episode after episode, season after season, is undoubtedly the well written and fleshed out characters. ![]() It is as close to an animated stage play as one can imagine. ![]() More impressive than its length, however, is the series' ability to captivate viewers with nothing more than minimalistic backdrops and long, uninterrupted dialogue sequences where characters trade endless puns back and forth with their sharp tongues. The multi-season epic was first released in July of 2009 by Studio SHAFT, an adaptation of the now 24+ novel epic from the pen of Nisio Isin. The Monogatari Series is an anime juggernaut.
